What Matters - Why Mid-Terms Matter: A Political Round Table

On November 2nd, the race in the 2nd District is one they'll be talking about as the national broadcasters take the measure of this much anticipated mid-term election. Here's the background: Democratic Congressman Glenn Nye was elected the same night President Barack Obama was, defeating Republican Congressman Thelma Drake. Almost immediately, the pressure was on. The economy was beginning its sluggish jobless recovery, but the pulse was weak. Then came health care reform and the Democratic congressman broke party ranks and voted against the bill. But even before that, Republicans were lining up to make a bid for the 2nd District. Among them, Kenny Golden, a former vice-chair of the party. But Golden abandoned the party in the Spring for an Independent bid. There were still six Republicans left in the field, but by June the party had settled on auto dealer Scott Rigell. So now it's a 3-way race: Incumbent Democratic Congressman Glenn Nye, Republican challenger Scott Rigell and Independent challenger Kenny Golden.
